Scott Allen on "[Plugin: WP Slimstat] Clarification of disk usage requirements, resource usage & phoning home?"

In your requirements section, you say users need "At least 5 MB of free web space", but your plugin, when unpacked on the server is approximately 22 MB!!

The GeoLite DB is another 750 kb when unpacked so, in reality, you need to say that users should have at least 23 MB available. (That's rough math....you can give the exact numbers. Perhaps there is more too that I didn't account for.)

WordPress Plugin rules state that any type of phone home functionality has to be set to off by default. ( No "phoning home" without user's informed consent. ) In the Advanced page of the settings it has this:

Enable UAN Yes No
Send anonymous data about user agents to our server for analysis. This allows us to contribute to the BrowsCap opensource project, and improve the accuracy of Slimstat's browser detection functionality. It also enables our transparent ads network. No worries, your site will not be affected in any way.

Neither button is selected...so it's ambiguous...is it on, or is it off? We won't use this plugin if it is on. And if it IS on, you should change this right away to be in compliance.

If it is off, to really put users at ease that you are abiding by the rules, it would probably be best if that "No" button was actually selected.

It should also be stated somewhere clearly in the documentation here on your WordPress.org page that this plugin will have some affect on your site's server load, and that it is simply unavoidable due to the nature of the plugin.

That's not an insult to your plugin...it does a lot of work, but it just simply isn't possible to have a stats plugin of this magnitude and doing database-heavy work that won't impact the site's performance and increase the server load to some extent, even if caching plugins are used and the site is fully optimized. It also should be noted that this plugin is going to increase the website's database size significantly when used over time, and possibly even bloat it if not proactively maintained. Users should also be informed to check with their web host to see if it is even allowed, as we're aware that several web hosting companies have banned this plugin due to it's high use of resources. That's not to say that users should not have the choice to use it...but they should know what they are getting into so they can make an informed decision. Perhaps they need a more powerful hosting setup, or should only use it in a certain environment, etc. But there should be informed choice.

Please clarify these issues. Thank you.
